Canadian N Numbers Explained

The N Number (or “tail number”) is a number that is unique to just one aircraft. So, if you get an N Number, it is yours and yours alone. You can find this number easily: on the exterior of every civil aircraft. While you may notice it at first glance, this number actually tells you a lot about the aircraft itself. Specifically, you’ll get what country the aircraft is registered in, and even about the type of aircraft. You get one of these numbers when you register your aircraft with the powers that be. We can help.

About Aircraft N Numbers in Canada

Every country’s N Numbers start with a certain letter. Canada, rightfully, starts with the letter “C.” That said, only C-F, C-G, and C-I have been allocated to Canadian aircraft. So, a strong majority of the aircraft that you see in Canada are going to have numbers that have N Numbers from C-GAAA to C-GZZZ. C-IAAA to C-IZZZ is for ultralight airplanes only. If you’ve seen Canadian aircraft with numbers that range anywhere from VO-AAA to VO-ZZZ, then those are most likely older aircraft indeed. They were used by Newfoundland up until they became part of Canada.
